American Airlines to Resume Daily Miami–Caracas Flights on Sept. 3

American Airlines to Resume Daily Miami–Caracas Flights on Sept. 3

August 28, 2026

American Airlines plans to resume daily nonstop flights between Miami and Caracas on Sept. 3, 2026, pending the reopening of Maiquetía International Airport after June earthquakes damaged the facility.

Daily nonstop service between Miami International Airport and Caracas is scheduled to return Sept. 3, provided Venezuela’s main international airport is ready to reopen.

American Airlines plans to restart daily nonstop flights between Miami International Airport and Caracas on Sept. 3, restoring a key South Florida connection that was suspended after powerful earthquakes damaged Venezuela’s main international airport in June.

The airline told the Miami Herald that service will operate nonstop in both directions. The restart, however, depends on the reopening of Maiquetía International Airport, located outside Caracas.

The airport was damaged by two earthquakes on June 24 that caused widespread destruction across Venezuela. The country’s official death toll surpassed 6,000, although the true number may be higher.

Commercial airlines suspended service to and from Caracas following the disaster.

Miami–Caracas Service Had Only Recently Returned

American Airlines had resumed direct flights between the United States and Venezuela on April 30, becoming the first carrier to restore that service.

Miami International Airport was the starting point for the return.

That marked American’s first direct service to Venezuela in seven years after the airline previously withdrew from the country.

The Miami–Caracas route is particularly significant for South Florida because of the region’s large Venezuelan community and Miami’s role as a major gateway between the United States and Latin America.

Maracaibo Flights Are Still Operating

American expanded its Venezuela schedule again on July 14 by launching daily flights between Miami and Maracaibo.

Maracaibo is one of Venezuela’s major business centers.

Unlike the Caracas service, those flights continued operating after the June earthquakes.

That gives South Florida travelers another direct Venezuela option while Caracas service remains suspended.

American Sent Relief Supplies After the Earthquakes

American Airlines also used one of its Boeing 737 aircraft to transport emergency aid to Venezuela following the disaster.

The shipment included more than 9,000 pounds of supplies.

According to the source report, those items included nonperishable food, water, baby formula, diapers, wipes and hygiene products.

Other U.S. Airlines Are Also Planning Venezuela Service

American is not the only U.S. carrier looking to rebuild direct connections with Venezuela.

United Airlines previously announced plans to restart service between Houston and Caracas beginning in August.

Those plans have since been delayed.

JetBlue Airways has also said it intends to begin service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Caracas before the end of the year.

If that service launches, South Florida could have direct Caracas flights from both Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Key Details / What You Need to Know:

  • Route: Miami International Airport to Caracas, Venezuela
  • Airline: American Airlines
  • Planned restart date: Sept. 3, 2026
  • Frequency: Daily
  • Flight type: Nonstop in both directions
  • Condition: Maiquetía International Airport must reopen
  • Why flights stopped: The airport was damaged during twin earthquakes on June 24
  • Other Venezuela service: American’s daily Miami–Maracaibo flights are continuing

What This Means for Miami:

For Miami-area travelers, the return of daily Caracas service would restore one of South Florida’s most important direct links to Venezuela.

That matters especially for families, business travelers and members of South Florida’s Venezuelan community who have had limited options since the June earthquakes disrupted air service.

Miami International Airport would once again serve as American Airlines’ primary nonstop gateway to Caracas, while Fort Lauderdale could gain its own direct connection later this year if JetBlue’s planned service begins as announced.
